Stowmarket and District Cycling Club - cycling since 1881

It's true! The earliest mention of the Stowmarket Bicycle Club was in the East Anglian Daily Times on June 17th, 1881.

Even back then it was an active club, holding an annual sports event, lantern parades and smoking concerts and even a road race. During that era one of the club's mainstays was J Lillistone.

In the 1930s the club's rider of the day was "Mighty Atom" Gilbert Rowden who, while a member, held all the club records form 25 to 100 miles.

The club was re-founded in 1981 by Doug Riley and John Howlett. Since then the club's gone from strength to strength in terms of membership and cycling disciplines with representatives in road racing, time trialling, grass track, mountain biking, cyclo-cross, charity rides, sportives and of course club rides.

Over the years the club has benefited from a number of influential chairmen, including the late Renny Stirling who was a stalwart and instigator of the modern era club (and a legendary TT rider in his day).

The club has seen success over the years with some notable riders, some of whom are still racing today:

The club kit

SDCC's yellow and black club kit is instantly recognisable and the envy of many.

There have been many versions over the years (some better than others), but the current incarnation was introduced in 2016 and proudly displays our sponsor, Fast Test.

The club as it is today

Today, our membership is in excess of 150 and still growing.

Running along side the club is our successful road race team, Fast Test Race Team.

But of course, we are a cycling club at heart and that means we take our club rides very seriously (especially the ones that involve cake and coffee).

If you love riding your bike, we're the club for you.
